Collaborating with the announcement from the Central Epidemic Command Center of extending the level 3 alert till July 26th, as well as in response to the fact that the crisis of the COVID-19 pandemic has not yet been completely averted, the three large-scale events, including the “Penghu Bay International Light Festival”, the “101 Hopping Bike”, and the “Gaillardia Islands Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon” planned to be held in fall and winter by the Penghu National Scenic Area Administration, Tourism Bureau, MOTC will be cancelled or the measures will be altered putting epidemic prevention in the first place. This is to avoid the risks of cluster infection and to ensure stable domestic epidemic control. Due to the nature of the event, it will be difficult to request the crowd to wear face masks and keep a safe social distance at all times.

Amongst these, the “Penghu Bay International Light Festival” which was originally planned to be held from August 14th to October 11th, 2021 has become the highlight of Penghu in fall and winter during recent years, turning it into an alternative characteristic event for “Firework in Summer, Light in Fall” in Penghu; it has become popular internationally with the winning of several international design awards throughout the past years. Although legislator Yang Yao endeavored to fight for the budget and plan for the transformation, the pandemic cannot be completely averted as yet. Hence, the event for this year will be cancelled after overall assessment, while the planning for the transformation will be conducted.

The “101 Hopping Bike” large-scale cycling event was originally scheduled to be held on September 26th. The event format will be altered to become an “Online Cycling Self-Challenge Event”, with a planned event period from September 1st to October 31st. Cyclers can freely choose a date within this period to register for the 20K Leisure Group, the 50K Experience Group, and the 101K Challenge Group ride. After completing the race, use the mobile phone APP to record the track, or take photos at designated scenic spots (with the bicycle), and then upload the image to personal Facebook while setting the account profile to public, and then make a note at the bottom of the post with “#2021 Online 101 Hopping Bike” to receive a collection of event souvenirs, characteristic post stamp,  race completion certificates, and the qualification to enter the draw. This event is also combined with the free guided cycling tour service. It has also launched exclusive cycling tour packages with travel agencies to incorporate meals, accommodation, tours, shopping, and transportation…etc., appealing to all cyclers in Taiwan to visit Penghu and enjoy the beauty of the coast at 20Km per hour in fall/winter with different travel styles.

Moreover, the only “Cross-Sea + Hopping + Lobster” vacation-style running tour in Taiwan is an international-level competition with professional certification, which is also known as “Gaillardia Islands Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon”, where besides wandering amongst the magnificent sceneries of Penghu, the sumptuous local delicacies supply station was also highly complimented by the participating contestants, who were unwilling to finish the competition after tasting the food. After a meticulous assessment, the event will be postponed to November 6th next year (2022), and the early-bird enrollment promotion is expected to be available in September this year (2021); please follow the “Penghu Happy Tour – Penghu National Scenic Area Administration” and “Gaillardia Islands Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon” Facebook fan pages for the relevant event info.

Director Hsu Tsung-Min of Penghu National Scenic Area Administration showed appreciation to the public for the great support towards the three fall/winter large-scale events organized by the administration; the style for fall/winter tours in Penghu has been transformed during recent years, basing on exquisite travel schedules including life learning or recreational experience, connecting all event series to enrich and brighten up Penghu in fall/winter. However, with the influences of the COVID-19 pandemic, it was left with no choice but to announce the cancellation or postponement of these events while putting epidemic prevention in the first place to reduce all possible potential risks.
