Dayi Temple

2009 Update Date:2023-10-30
The Zhuwan Village Harbor is moderately deep with stable currents, and fishing is the primary economic activity. In the early years, most Penghu fishing boats were made here. In the industry’s heyday, there were seven or eight shipyards. However, as the fishing industry declined, the boatyards’ business plummeted, and today only one remains. Zhuwan’s fishing industry changed too. The locale was selected as an experimental area for net-cage aquaculture in 1975 due to its calm and expansive ocean waters. Net-cage aquaculture artificially raises fish, with white pomfret, grouper, and oysters as the primary production.

Besides fishing, Zhuwan is well-known for its annual harvest of “white-film” peanuts. The crop is planted from late January to early February and harvested in June. Because the white-film peanuts are the first harvest and offer unique flavor, they are the first choice of connoisseurs. This explains why Zhuwan enjoys the reputation as Penghu's premier peanut-producing area.

The Dayi Temple is the village’s spiritual center, dedicated to the warrior deity Guan Gong. On the temple plaza is an imposing statue of a stable boy leading Guan Gong’s famous “red rabbit” steed. In the basement is a lotus-shaped coral chamber made of coral stone. Colorful coral covers the walls –– it looks like you have entered an underwater wonderworld. Next door to Dayi Temple is the Zhuwan Crab Museum, which boasts a collection of more than 600 crab specimens and over a thousand live crabs, including many species never seen in Taiwan, which offers an eye-opening experience!
