Yuwengdao Visitors Center

3736 Update Date:2023-10-30
The West Island is so named because it is west of Penghu Main Island. West Island is also known as Yuwengdao, meaning the ‘Fisherman’s Island’ in Chinese. The Taiwan Straits have always boasted an abundance of fish, and many fishermen base their businesses on this island. That is why the Penghu Archipelago was once called 'Pescadores', meaning ‘fishermen’s islands.’

The Yuwengdao Visitor Center is near the Penghu Great Bridge on West Island. You can admire the center's many exhibits, and expert guides will introduce you to the customs and culture of West Island. On the observation, deck you can get a panoramic view of the sea-spanning Penghu Great Bridge.

A bronze statue of an old Xiyu fisherman stands opposite the center. A symbol of the local fishing industry's prosperity, it has been here for over 30 years. After years of exposure to the sun and sea winds, the once gleaming statue had become mottled with rust. Fortunately, cleaning and polishing restored its shine in 2021.

Artist Hong Yi’s “Leaping Fish” sculpture stands in front of the center, which features the rockfish grouper, the Penghu County’s official fish, with various brilliant colors. The statue also incorporates aspects of local culture, environment, and ecology. We hope this imaginative work of art will familiarize more people with Penghu's marine ecological environment.
