Wukongding Trail and Wukongding Fort

2607 Update Date:2023-10-30
The ruins of the Wukongding Fort (meaning ‘five-hole fortress’ in Chinese) occupy the high ground near Qimawan East Port. This installation derives its name from the five quadrangular portholes carved into the stone wall, through which defenders could monitor any signs of enemy activity in the port and over the sea.

In the Guangxu period of the Qing dynasty, the naval commander Wu Hongluo was stationed in Penghu. After supervising the construction of the Penghu City, he established five artillery installations on the West Island around 1888, one of which is the battery here in Qima Bay. Below the fort lies the underground bunker designed to fit the mountain’s downward slope. The entrances and exits at both ends have stepped trenches. Today, only remnants of the fort have survived, but a refurbished bunker is fully intact.

A 600-meter-long trail paved with gravel and wooden planks winds along the base of the Wukongding Mountain, leading to the mountain's summit with a 10-to-15-minute hike. As you walk on this trial, you will be surrounded by beautiful nature and immerse yourself in profound historical significance!

A pavilion and a lookout atop the mountain offer a panoramic view of Penghu Bay. You can watch the sun rising from the sea at dawn and boats returning to Magong Harbor at dusk. At night, you can enjoy the nightscape with fishing lights over the sea and gaze at the starry sky, treating your eyes to stunning scenic beauty!
