The Penghu National Scenic Area Administration (Penghu-NSA), Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation Communications (MOTC), hosted the 5th "2022 Gaillardia Island Penghu Cross-Sea Marathon" at the Xiyu West Fort Visitor Center Plaza on November 6, 2022 (Sunday). The event kicked off at 6:30 in the morning with 2,827 runners that included 25 international athletes from 10 countries. All the runners raced against the wind and challenged their personal limits!
As the only resort-style running vacation in Taiwan to combine sea-crossing and island-hopping, as well as Penghu's great seafood for good measure, this year marks the fifth iteration of the annual race. This year’s race saw strong support from running enthusiasts which led to all spots snapped up extremely quickly even as additional enquiries were made. What was even more noteworthy was how even more peoples’ interest towards "racing the wind" was piqued after the press conference held on the island. In addition to the cuisine, runners will be running through most of Penghu's most picturesque sights during the race. The organizers hope that runners will not only explore the beauty of Penghu on their own two feet but also introduce more international running enthusiasts to Penghu’s enchanting and diverse beauty.
In addition to extensive planning which went into the preparations for this year's race, extensive preparations were also made for this race’s peripheral services and events. To promote the philosophy of environmental friendliness and sustainability, not only did runners received a race-exclusive eco-friendly drinking bottle, but unique cape-style towels and standing toilets for women which were used in European competitions were also introduced as a showpiece for all of Taiwan. Seven "Penghu Creative Gourmet Supply Stations" which were created with the runners in mind, offered over 60 dishes which refreshed the runners, and were placed strategically along the course. The "IRONMEDIC" team made up of experienced runners with rich medical backgrounds were invited to take part in the run. In addition, five EMT teams patrolled the course on vehicle, allowing runners to challenge the Gaillardia Island Marathon filled, touched, and safely.
At the post-race Windcrazy Party, bands from Taiwan were invited to perform and supercharge the venue with their passionate voices. If you didn't grab enough to eat along the way, don't worry! The Penghu Food Carnival will make up for speedy runners who did not manage to have their fill on track! Also, the entire race was broadcast live on a 200" screen to keep friends and relatives up to date. The event ended with a roaring success, and we hope to see everyone again next year!
