To promote low-carbon tourism and encourage greater public participation in sustainable travel, the Penghu National Scenic Area Headquarters (Penghu NSA Headquarters) will launch a “Sustainability Coin” redemption campaign from May 1 to November 1, 2026. The Penghu NSA Headquarters noted that Penghu has long struggled with the invasive plant species white leadtree (
Leucaena leucocephala), whose drought resistance and invasive nature threaten local ecosystems. To address this issue, the Penghu NSA Headquarters specially designed the Sustainability Coins using wood from the invasive species, transforming an environmental problem into a tourism-driven sustainability initiative. Travelers who complete sustainability missions can collect Sustainability Coins and spend them at participating businesses listed on the “Penghu Sustainability Map,” enjoying practical rewards while creating a mutually beneficial model for both eco-conscious visitors and local businesses.
The Penghu Sustainability Map currently features 30 selected businesses covering accommodations, dining, DIY experiences, water recreation, and local specialty products, with additional participating businesses continuing to join. Rewards available through Sustainability Coins range from cash discounts to limited-edition gifts. The Penghu National Scenic Area Headquarters reminds the public that each Sustainability Coin may only be redeemed for one promotional offer. Travelers are encouraged to complete sustainability missions, collect more coins, and add memorable experiences to their journey while supporting Penghu’s sustainable development. Detailed information on participating businesses and promotional offers is available on the official campaign website.
