The Penghu National Scenic Area Headquarters, together with the Penghu County Government’s Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau and the Penghu Fishery Research Center of the Ministry of Agriculture’s Fisheries Research Institute, held a green sea turtle release event this morning (November 7th) on the beach in front of the Wang’an Green Sea Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center. More than 40 participants, including students and teachers from Wang’an Junior High and Elementary Schools as well as visiting tourists, joined the event. Participants helped promote marine ecological conservation, offered their blessings to the turtles, and expressed hopes that they may one day return to their birthplace.
The two turtles released today were initially found in September 2023 on Changlaizi Beach in Wang’an shortly after hatching. They had been injured and were discovered by conservation staff during routine nesting patrols. After receiving long-term care, they were transferred on March 21, 2025, to the “Wang’an Green Sea Turtle Rescue and Shelter” established by the Penghu Fishery Research Center for continued rehabilitation and observation.
Following several months of attentive care and thorough health assessments, the turtles were deemed ready to return to the wild. The release took place successfully at 11:30 a.m. during high tide. Before the release, the organizers also conducted an ecological guided tour and educational session, introducing students and visitors to the importance of Wang’an’s green sea turtle nesting habitats. By involving the public directly, the event helped raise awareness and deepen understanding of marine conservation.
The Penghu National Scenic Area Headquarters stated that it will continue to collaborate closely with the Ocean Affairs Council, the Penghu County Government’s Agriculture and Fisheries Bureau, the Fisheries Research Institute, and other agencies. Through the Wang’an Green Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center, the Headquarters aims to carry on the protective spirit symbolized by the “Hao Shan Tang” stone stele. The goal is to further strengthen sea turtle conservation tourism and ecological education, allowing more visitors to learn to cherish the ocean and appreciate nature during their travels, while putting sustainable tourism into practice.
