Penghu National Scenic Area Administration of Tourism Bureau, Ministry of Transportation and Communications (Penghu-NSA) is promoting sustainable tourism in Penghu under the “Wave Penghu” brand based on the concept of digital tourism. The Penghu Tourism Circle was officially established on July 16, with Minister of Transportation and Communications - Wang Kuo-tsai, Director-General of Tourism Bureau - Chang Shi-chung, Penghu County Magistrate - Lai Feng-wei, Legislative Yuan member - Yang Yao, Penghu County Council Speaker - Liu Chen Zhao-ling and Penghu-NSA Director - Hsu Tsung-min, all on hand to witness the event. Minister Wang said that the time for tourism revitalization is now and hoped that Penghu tourism will continue to shine like a pearl of the sea.

The Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) has worked untiringly to promote high-quality tourism. During his speech, Minister Wang stated that the creation of the tourism circle will help integrate food, accommodation, travel, shopping and transportation resources. Joint marketing of an international brand will enhance the quality of service in the tourism industry, and help cultivate, expand and strengthen Penghu’s unique tourism offerings.

Minister Wang added that COVID-19 has made the last two years very difficult for everyone in the tourism industry. Nevertheless, he was grateful to the relative industry for everything they’ve done during epidemic time. The COVID-19 pandemic is now transitioning towards a co-existence stage. Taiwan will therefore gradually begin lifting its border restrictions as well. The tourism industry is now turning a corner, and he hoped that tourism operators in Penghu can work together as a team to market their food and scenery to the outside world and revitalize the tourism industry.

Wang noted that the establishment of the Penghu Tourism Circle is the culmination of all the hard work by Chief Convener Tsai, the two deputy conveners, the executive director, team conveners and all members. Their contributions will ensure the sustainable development of the tourism industry in Penghu. To encourage domestic tourists to visit Penghu, air transport will be supplemented by the commissioning of the Penghu Ferry that the local people have lobbied a long time next year. The new ferry will not help alleviate congestion in air transport but also promote the development of maritime tourism for Taiwan and Penghu.

Director-General Chang of Tourism Bureau stated that tourism circles around Taiwan are now all hard at work. Penghu’s unique and precious natural beauty, rich maritime resources, and culture will now be grouped into four season: Spring of Seabird Watching, Summer of Stone Weirs, Autumn of Strange Rocks, and Winter of Historical Exploration. These will imbue each season with their own tourism attributes. When the Penghu Fireworks Festival and Penghu Autumn Festival that draws more than a million visitors a year are taken into account, local and international tourists can now visit Penghu all-year-round to discover a different side to the island.

Nearly a hundred “food, accommodation, travel, shopping, transportation” tourism operators from Penghu were invited by the Tourism Bureau to take part in a forum with the guests as part of the event today to ensure that tourism policy met public expectations and industry needs. Local industry representatives were all eager to offer their input, such as greater promotion of in-depth tours on Penghu’s ecology, culture, and geology; enhanced digital marketing, support for talent development, and subsidies for infrastructure development. These will help attract more types of travelers and shorten the tourism off-season for Penghu.

After listening to the industry, Minister Wang noted that it is the tourism industry that knows best about the state of tourism in Penghu. Penghu is one of the top six international scenic regions and has its own unique tourism charms. He has already directed the Tourism Bureau to listen to industry input on real-world requirements, and now asks the industry to submit their proposals as well. Proactive assistance with be provided by the Tourism Bureau and Penghu-NSA.

Display stalls were set up by food, accommodation, travel, shopping and transportation providers in the Penghu Tourism Circle on the day. These included Wave Penghu’s co-branded vendor “Pong Food”, the travel and food & beverage industry representatives “Lion Travel”, “Sea Walk”, “Higofeng Aquatic”, and “Taizutang Cycline Tabcina Benth”, as well youth returnee start-ups ad regional revitalization organizations such as “When I Sea You”, “Penghu Fish”, “Daobien”, and  “Happiness Foods (幸福山海味)” The 10 local vendors showed off Penghu’s diverse and extensive range of tourism brands. The formation of Penghu Tourism Circle will encourage more local investment and more visitors to Penghu.
