From February 12 to February 20, 2014, Penghu National Scenic Area Administration is going to sponsor the “Prayer on the Most Beautiful Beach – Visit Penghu during Lantern Festival/Free fortune turtle dolls giveaway” in order to allow visitors enjoy the festiveness of the Lantern Festival and know more about the norm of offering the turtle cakes. Every visitor at Penghu will be presented a small gift during the activity, bringing back happiness and good memories.

Mr. Chang, the director of Penghu National Scenic Area Administration, expressed, “the natives of Penghu celebrate the Lantern Festival more enthusiastically than the Lunar New Year.” We can see how people in Penghu value the Lantern Festival. They eat turtle cakes to pray for peace and prosperity. If people get “divine answer” from tossing the divination blocks, they can take any kind of “turtle cakes” back from the temple. It foretells that they will enjoy peace, good fortune at work, and good health in the coming year. In the next year, they have to offer the same amount or more of turtle cakes to the divinities to pass the good luck to other people. In different times, the norm of offering turtle cakes change as well, from the gelatinous rice cake, red turtle cake, to rice cake, rice noodles turtle cake, gold turtle, and other items in recent years. Regardless of the changes, the customs and the legacy of local culture remain constant – people pray to the deities for blessing. It brings people much fun during the Lantern Festival.

According to the Lantern Festival Good Fortune Trip promotion project all visitors at (not native of) Penghu are eligible to exchange a 2014 Fortune Turtle Doll at the Visitor Information Center, Penghu Airport with photo identifications and air tickets between February 12 and February 20, 2014.
