Qingwan Chihkan Cactus Park

2884 Update Date:2023-10-30
Qingwan Cactus Park was originally an abandoned military camp from the Japanese colonial era. Today it's a well-planned cactus park. There are basalt pillboxes and magnificent formations of columnar basalt on one side of the park. Climb to the highest point for a spectacular ocean view! On entering the park, you’ll be amazed by the multitude of cacti, nearly a hundred varieties. The area is divided into different sections, where you can enjoy the scenery, explore on your own, or even have a barbecue!

In Qingwan Cactus Park, you’ll not only view a variety of unusual plants but also see many historical artifacts. The camp, observation platforms, artillery batteries, ammunition depots, drainage ditches and other facilities are intact, including a 1902 coastal artillery fortification. The site was the earliest Japanese-style fort in Penghu.

Next to the park is the Penghu International Diving Center, on the shores of a beautiful bay. The winds are weaker and the waters calm, so it’s especially suited for those new to diving. The brilliant white sands of Shili Beach are only a three-minute drive away. Composed of coral and seashell particles, the beach stretches for more than a kilometer.  Blessed by nature, this is one of Penghu's finest seaside attractions. Enjoy the tranquil azure sea and lovely wind-shaped dunes! In an earlier period, Shili was a well-known Penghu beach resort, but later fell into decline. However, in recent years, businesses have come to the area, offering food, accommodations, and water sports activities, making Shili one of Penghu's most popular beaches. Strolling through the village, you’ll spot scenes of fish being laid out to dry. Because it’s a typical fishing village, there are also many fish processing plants in Shili, so while you’re here, why not sample a local specialty, “stinky-meat dried fish!”
