Jibei Wusheng Tempel

1781 Update Date:2023-10-30
Jibei is the largest of Penghu’s northern islands; the village is concentrated in the area between Guanyin Temple to Wusheng Temple. Like elsewhere in Penghu, houses in Jibei were traditionally built with coral stone or basalt. When coral dies and accumulate on the sea bed, the salt content decreases, forming coral stone, which can be used as a construction material. When building traditional houses, iron bars were staked into the ground, then ropes were tied to the bars to mark off the wall area. Finally, coral stones were neatly stacked into walls. Coral stone is a key component of Penghu architecture.

Located in the heart of the village, the two-story Wusheng Temple was Jibei’s earliest temple, dedicated to the deity Wenhung Shengdi. Wusheng Temple and neighboring Guanyin Temple are the village's spiritual core. According to legend, over a hundred years ago, a red light appeared on the sea east of Jibei. When villagers investigated, they found a golden statue of the goddess Guanyin, which they brought back to the village and enshrined in Wusheng Temple. Funds were later raised to build Guanyin Temple, and Jibei has prospered ever since.

Behind the village are many caizhai, or “vegetable houses,” basalt or coral-stone enclosures that protect farm crops from strong northeast monsoon winds. Go north to the coast and you’ll see beautiful sandy beaches and sandbanks. What’s special is that ocean currents have caused sand to accumulate in recent years, forming sandbars. The sandbar at the northwest end of Beikan Hill has been growing steadily, forming a lagoon, nearly connecting to the island proper, and significantly increasing Jibei’s landmass!
