Penghu Aquarium

2407 Update Date:2023-02-01
The two-story building with gray-white walls and green roof tiles you’re seeing now is the Penghu Aquarium. Located in Qitou Village, Baisha Township, it’s an extension of the Fisheries Research Institute. The aquarium features seashore, reef, and ocean exhibition areas, showcasing a variety of marine life. Most impressive is the 14-meter-long arched underwater tunnel. Stroll through the tunnel to observe undersea creatures of all kinds. There are also touch tanks and fish feeding shows. Exciting shows are held every morning and afternoon in the ocean-pool area––check out the fun interactions between aquarium staff and marine life.

Across from the aquarium, a seawall extending into the Taiwan Strait was once a pearl farm built by a Japanese company. Attracted by the wall’s unusual wavy shape, tourists come here in droves to take pictures. However, if you want to snap photos in the blue seawater, don't forget to check tide times first. Choose the right time at high tide; otherwise, you’ll be standing on a wet mudflat!

Qitou Water Park is on the east side of the aquarium. Designed and constructed using the tidal range, the park features an intertidal strolling area, a tidal-zone circular pool, and play facilities for kids. Adults and children can observe intertidal-zone creatures and learn about tidal effects together in this entertaining, educational recreation area.
