The black-and-white Mudouyu Lighthouse is a landmark of Mudou Island. Located 3.8 nautical miles north of Jibei, the island used to be called ‘Modou’ Island because it is shaped like a carpenter’s ink marker. The name was later changed to Mudou Island due to similar sounds. As the northernmost inhabited island in the Penghu archipelago, it is also called the North Island, and the Mudouyu Lighthouse was previously known as the North Island Lighthouse.
The lighthouse’s brick foundation and cast-iron body prevent rusting and damage caused by wind and waves, and the alternating black and white parallel stripes are a hard-to-miss warning sign. Nearby buildings house the lighthouse keepers’ offices and dormitories. Although the lighthouse interior is off-limits to the public, viewing the exterior of this magnificent structure is well worth the trip.
