Dream Beach

4217 Update Date:2023-10-30
Dream Beach is Xiyu’s secret. Formerly known as Wang'an Beach, this small but beautiful expanse of sand stretches for about 200 meters. Why’s it called Dream Beach? Because it’s the best place to watch the sunset in Xiyu and it only appears at low tide––being normally submerged underwater, so be sure to check tide times before you come!

Historic Zhuzai Street is in Xiaochijiao, a community near Dream Beach. Once known as "Kaiyu 1st Street,” the 300-meter long thoroughfare bustled with activity during the Japanese occupation, boasting a tailor shop, an ironsmith, a bakery, and other businesses. In its heyday, 24 courtyard houses lined the street from end to end. But after the village's fortunes declined and people moved away, the old houses were nearly empty, and prosperity was a thing of the past. A large force of anti-communist Nationalist troops were stationed here in the early postwar years. The military opened a commissary on Zhuzai Street, but it shut down after the soldiers departed. A mottled ROC national emblem above the lintel of No. 129 is a legacy of that era. Even the large bamboo grove that gave the street its name has disappeared.
