Head east from Lintou in Penghu, and you will reach the village on the east end of Penghu — Guoye. In recent years, it has become the most popular place to watch sunrise. Guoye is a primitive village east of Huxi Township. ''Guoye” is a type of plant, and has been growing lushly here since the Ming Dynasty; thus, this is the first village to be named after a plant among the 90 villages in Penghu.

Guoye Sunrise is just as famous as Xiyu Sunset. The small hill northeast of the village is the perfect spot to watch sunrise. Syu Family in Guoye Village still maintains the traditional “worshiping” custom on the day of winter solstice, and along with the community interactions in Old Kueibiao Villages. The Grey kiln remains in the villages, Guoye seems all the more beautiful in a special way.

Every corner in this small village is a good place to watch sunrise and the sunrise here is nothing like what you see up on the mountains. Without the layers of clouds, here, you have a peaceful, vast ocean, even though there is no redness glowing through the clouds. Youu see the different shades and brightness of red coming from the sun and this is when Guoye really wakes up from the peace and quiet hours.

When the sky is clear on a summer sunrise day, you can see all the way to the Central Mountain on Taiwan Island. You can watch as the sun rises from behind the somewhat visible mountain. Basked in the golden light, Jishanyu and Dinggouyu lie silently on the sea, forming a beautiful and touching sight. In addition to sunrise, there are also quite a number of historical houses and heritages here.

“Guoye Sunrise” and “Xiyu Sunset” are both famous sights in Penghu; “Guoye Sunrise” is also one of the eight most renowned views in Penghu. If you want to watch the sunrise at Guoye, it is recommended that you check out the sunrise hours the night before, and leave enough time for transport, since the sun rises fairly quickly, early start is recommended just in case you crawl out of the bed in the middle of the night, yet still fail to catch it!
