Pengpeng Beach

2449 Update Date:2023-10-30
Pengpeng Beach is between Bird Island and Yuanbei Island in the Baisha Township. How did the beach come about? A natural sandbar formed after ocean currents washed sand and sediment away from Jibei, Niao, and Yuanbei islands and deposited it off the coast of Bird Island. Aided by Typhoon Wayne’s winds and waves in 1986, the sands coalesced into a beach island. Since then, Pengpeng Beach has been above the sea level at high tide. As sand accumulates, the beach slowly merges with Bird Island –– you can wade across when the tide recedes.

The long, narrow beach comprises white coral debris, shell sand, and quartz. Its tail end sways with the tide and currents. When viewed from afar, it looks like a white dragon wagging its tail in the sea, so Pengpeng is also known as "Dragon Beach." Here you can enjoy various water activities, such as snorkeling, banana boat rides and jet skiing. You can also try clear kayaking or stand-up paddling, which combines surfing and kayaking. Whatever you do, you will have a great time!

Pengpeng Beach is also an ecological reserve. From April to October every year, hundreds of terns roost and breed here, mainly the red and crested varieties. The government has set aside three-fourths of the island as a seabird refuge. Visitors should not enter the area.
