Jinyu

1937 Update Date:2023-10-30
Have you heard of Zhang Baiwan, a businessman from Baisha Township? Although his former residence is in Wadong Village on Baisha Island, it's rumored that his immense wealth came from Jinyu!

It's said that Zhang Baiwan often fished on this uninhabited isle before striking it rich. He’d collect black stones on his fishing trips and take them home. Over time, he acquired enough to build a wall. Later on, a knowledgeable person told him that the black rock was actually black gold. Thus, Zhang became the richest man in Penghu, and the island came to be called Jinyu, meaning “Isle of Gold.”

Although the story can’t be verified, what is certain is that there is no black gold on Jinyu today–– instead the black rocks on the island are basalt. The columnar basalt joints here are distinctive and endlessly varied, including upright, flat-lying, and radial configurations. There's also a famous natural landform at the southern end of Jinyu composed of flat-lying columnar basalt. It looks like as massive lion from a distance, bearing a striking resemblance to Egypt’s Sphinx. The locals call it "Lion Head." It's definitely worth a look!
