Longmen Beach Park

1946 Update Date:2023-10-30
The Longmen Beach Park is on the easternmost side of the Penghu Main Island, in the grassy area between the Longmen and Guoye villages. The beach in the park faces the Taiwan Straits and features the famous tank-shaped toilets and changing rooms.

Have you heard about the line, “Listen to the drumming waves in the quiet Longmen night"? It appears in "Eight Penghu Vistas," a poem by the Qing Dynasty Penghu scholar Xu Jinying describing the waters of this area. Owing to the dense reef cover and the seabed's varying height, waves rolling into the bay boom like drums when they break against the shore, the so-called "drumming waves of Longmen.” Driven by blustery northeast winter winds, the stormy rollers crashing against the shoreline are magnificent. If you’d like to experience the phenomenon, the coast next to Longmen Fude Ancient Well is the best place to watch and listen!

If you follow the Huxi Cycling Path, you’ll come to another beach in the Longmen Village, Lizhengjiao Beach, an excellent place for swimming and snorkeling in the summer. In winter, forceful northeast winds send waves smashing against the shoreline rocks, covering them with green seaweed, a spectacular sight. The beach is also a witness to history. Next to the road leading to the beach is the Longmen Lizhengjiao Japanese Army Landing Monument. Erected after the 1895 Yiwei War, the memorial commemorates the Japanese occupation of Penghu. The granite monument was originally a three-part structure, but only the upper part remains; the base was a later addition. In 1945, the original inscription was erased and renamed "Taiwan Retrocession Monument," commemorating Taiwan’s return to ROC’s sovereignty. In 2000, it was officially designated as a County historic monument by the Penghu County Government.
