Hongluo Stone Weir and Fish Stoves

2082 Update Date:2023-10-30
Hongluo Village possesses ten stone weirs or artificial fish traps at the end Hongluo Bay. Most existed since the Qing period, while others date from the Japanese era. Three of them are double weirs measuring over 300 meters long. The total length of all the weirs is 1,375 meters, making it the largest group of stone weirs in Penghu County.

When stone weir fishing prospered, it was customary to worship the weirs to pray for people’s well-being and an abundance of fish harvest. The rites were held when fishermen constructed weirs, made bountiful catches, and expressed gratitude to gods on the first and fifteenth days of the lunar calendar. Villagers would prepare offerings to entreat or thank the gods and cooked rice noodles and fresh fish to treat others. Weir owners would also prepare “red turtle cakes” to present to stockholders.

In the 1960s, when Penghu's fishing industry was at its peak, ‘fish stoves’ –– places for steaming, drying, and processing fish –– were set up at fishing ports or nearby villages. When fishing boats returned to the harbor, fishermen would carry the catch –– squid, herring, and other varieties –– to the fish stoves. Fish were first soaked and washed in saltwater, then placed in round bamboo baskets, steamed for several minutes, and then dries in the sun. After drying, the fish were packaged and exported to Taiwan or Japan. When Penghu’s fishing industry declined, fish stoves became part of history.
