Green Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center

59696 Update Date:2023-10-30
In 1994, the first green turtle wearing a satellite tracker “Wang an No.1” set out from Wang an in Penghu. It passed Taiwan Strait, through East China Sea Shelf, up to an island south of Kyushu in Japan. It spent three years and traveled 3400km back to Penghu, which provided an important record for the research of sea turtle ecological history in Taiwan.

Many beaches on Taiwan Island were recorded to have sea turtles coming ashore to lay eggs, but now, there are only a few places left. For instance, the reserve in Wang an Township of Penghu County is the one place where green turtles visit more often and more steady to lay eggs.

Standing southeast of Wanganyu, the building shaped like a sea turtle is the “Green Turtle Tourism and Conservation Center”. Upon entering, you can see the natural ecology in Wang an, including migratory birds , protected animals, and of course the most important of all, “green turtles”. The exhibitions there  include: turtle species, distributed environment and ecology, and  all the exhibitions that are well-worth exploring.
