The origin of the name Kueibishan: When looking at Beiliao coast from a distance, its mountain is shaped like a sea turtle bending over on the sea, therefore it was called "turtle wall mountain" (gueibishan), and later on renamed Kueibishan using its homonymic sound.
In the past, on a full-moon night, when there were still many fishing boats on out the sea towards the east, basked in the soft moonlight, you would feel as if you were part of the starry sky; thus such view was named "Starry Kueibi".

Guoyeh is a primitive village east of Hushi Township. ''Guoyeh" is a type of plant, and has been growing lushly here since the Ming Dynasty; thus, this is the first village to be named after a plant among the 90 villages in Penghu.

Guoyeh Sunrise is just as famous as Siyu Sunset. The small hill northeast of the village is the perfect spot to watch sunrise. Syu Family in Guoyeh Village still maintains the traditional "worshipping" custom on the day of winter solstice, and along with the community interactions in Old Kueibiao Villages, the grey kiln remains in the villages, Guoyeh seems all the more beautiful in a primitive way.

Every corner in this small village is a good place to watch sunrise and the sunrise here is nothing like what you see up on the mountains. Without the layers of clouds, here, you have a peaceful, vast ocean, even though there is no redness glowing through the clouds, you see the different shades and brightness of red coming from the sun; this is when Guoyeh really wakes up from the peace and quiet hours.

When the sky is clear on a summer sunrise day, you can see all the way to the Central Mountain on Taiwan Island, watch as the sun rises from behind the somewhat visible mountain; basked in the golden light, Jishanyu and Dinggouyu lie silently on the sea, forming a beautiful and touching sight. In addition to sunrise, there are also quite a number of historical houses and heritages here.
"Guoyeh Sunrise" and "Siyu Sunset" are both famous sights in Penghu; "Guoyeh Sunrise" is also one of the eight most renowned views in Penghu. If you want to watch the sunrise at Guoyeh, it is recommended that you check out the sunrise hours the night before, and leave enough time for transport, since the sun rises fairly quickly, early start is recommended just in case you crawl out of the bed in the middle of the night, yet still fail to catch it!

Transport: Head out of Magong City following No. 202 Line all the way towards the east and you will reach Guoyeh Sunrise Tower on the east coast.
Address: Near Guoyeh Fishing Port, Guoyeh Village, Hushi Township, Penghu County
Entrance Fee: Free of charge; if any fee is required, please consult the on-site bulletin notice.
Opening Hours: 30mins ride from Magong City to Guoyeh Village, sunrise hour will depend on the weather and the time the sun rises on that day.

It strides above the Houmen Waterway between Baisha and Xiyu Islands. It is said the ocean current underneath the bridge can be as fast as 3 meters per second—the second most dangerous in Penghu. In particular, when the northeastern monsoon arrives in winter, the ocean current becomes fiercer than ever—not even a single boat may sail on it. Thus, bridge construction work began in 1965 and was completed in 1970 to facilitate marine traffic between the islands. Embankment was expanded in 1984 due to bridge erosion/collapse. In 1996, thePenghu Great Bridge was re-inaugurated as a duo-pathway bridge. The Penghu Great Bridge looks like a rainbow on the sea. Today, it is not only an important traffic route between Xiyu and Baisha, but also a major scenic spot. At the northern tip of the bridge in Xiyu, early cement frameworks and some piers of the bridge remain. They respectively show that electricity in the old days was delivered across the seas through high voltage wires across the seas, and that an old bridge existed before the new one was built.
Dacang Islet, a great place to appreciate the ocean-crossing bridge
The Dacang Islet, praised as the “pearl of the Penghu Inland Sea,” is located on the inland sea surrounded by Magong, Baisha and Xiyu Islands. The islet also offers a magnificent panoramic view of the Penghu Ocean-Crossing Bridge. Visitors can take a boat from Houkutan, Chongguang Neighborhood, Magong to the Dacang Islet. In 20 minutes, they will be able to ashore the place. Dacang is the only islet inhabited by human beings in the inland ocean of Penghu. The name “Dacang” may have derived from the fact that the inland sea is a major fishing ground in Penghu. Along the Dacang Islet, the shores are smooth, and tidal flats are vast. It is especially featured by five giant tidal weirs.

Regarding the history of the Great Banyan, a definite answer is yet to be found, but one legend has it that during 1662 – 1722, a merchant vessel passed the waters around Tongliang when it encountered a shipwreck, and the only thing that survived was a sapling floating on the sea; residents of Tongliang picked it up and planted it in front of the temple; judging by this legend, the Tongliang Great Banyan could possibly be over 300 hundred years old.
Another legend has it that the Tongliang Great Banyan is probably onlytwo hundred years old; according to Chinese planting customs, trees are usually only planted after a temple is built, so, judging by the history of Baoan Temple, which is established overtwo hundred years ago, which means, the Tongliang Great Banyan could be100 years younger than the first legend. Whichever legend is true, the spectacular sight created by the Great Banyan is, without a doubt, worth the visit all the same.

The wind farm happens to be situated in Jhongtun’s second nursery, and designed as a windmill park; it is the new landmark for famous tourist sites in Baisha Township. This wind farm is the second in Taiwan, using the third generation wind turbine in Penghu; the motor used by this wind turbine is the latest German design, able to change speed. When the wind force changes, the angle of the blades will be able to adjust accordingly, the spinning speed can also be adjusted according to the generation demand, taking a big step towards the control of stable electricity.
The principle of wind power:
Wind power is the electricity generated by the wind spinning the blades on the windmill, in turn accelerating the spinning speed through the accelerator, generation can start around the speed of 3m per sec, and create output when wind speed reaches 13-15m per sec; the wind farm must be located in an unsheltered place with long windy period, high average wind speed, and stable wind force, the geographical environment must also be appropriate to lower investment cost and increase output.

Since the waters between Mudouyu and Jibeiyu is a deep water abrasion platform, submerged reefs are everywhere, even where the water is less than 1m deep, hence the numerous accounts of shipwrecks. It is said that ancestors who lived on Jibei used to pick up floating stuff from the wrecked ships. But for precisely the same reason, animals and plants under the sea can all enjoy sufficient sunlight, and people above water can also see right to the bottom of the ocean, and sail the beautiful underwater world. To ensure the safety of the boats, a lighthouse was built on Mudouyu in 1899. An iron-framed lighthouse of 40m high, painted in black and white stripes, standing as the tallest lighthouse in East Asia.
The lighthouse is equipped with its own generators, with its own lighthouse keeper. The basalt composed Mudouyu still maintains its primitive landscape, with black rocks tightly surrounding the island, causing beautiful waves and giving off a sense of heroism.
There is a shallow sand belt between Mudouyu and Jibei, extending hundreds of meters long and 5m wide, where the water only comes up to the knees; walking on the sand belt is like walking on the sea, very entertaining. If you visit here, you can also see beautiful seashells, but you must be careful. If you take a speedboat from the Jibei harbor, you can see coral reef clearly along the way, with tropical fishes swimming in the water, truly a spectacular and beautiful sight. Another special landscape of Mudouyu is the underwater tunnel. It is at the bottom of a steep cliff, hidden by the sea during flood tide, but when the tide ebbs, people can walk in sideways. The tunnel is about 80m long, it is a special basalt fissure, housing beautiful migratory fishes; a perfect place for diving and exploring.

Gupoyu

Gupoyu is situated northwest of Baisha and southwest of Jibeiyu. It is a mesa plateau composed by basalt; extending 1km from north to south, it is the largest unmanned island among Penghu islands. The island has a lot of vesicular basalt, but the surface is covered with ferrugieous quartz sandstone, creating a strong comparison; this is truly a unique scene among all islands in Penghu.
The island houses a British Shipwreck Monument, on its east side is the silver anchovy fish ground, and the southeast side houses beautiful corals, great for surfing when the tide ebbs; the north side is the famous laver ground, Penghu island has a lot of reefs and is extremely windy with big waves during the winter, and this place is known far and wide for its abundant harvest of laver; towards the end of every lunar year, there will be a large harvest event, when firecrackers will be lit, and everybody will bring out their best skills to harvest laver, which is a blessing for them in the cold harsh winter!
The origin of the name Gupoyu has aroused the curiosity and wild guesses from many. It is said that a long, long time ago, there lived a young lady in a village, who had a boy friend whom she had loved for years; however, her parents were against this relationship and forced her to marry someone else. This frail girl decided to run away from home to fight against her parents’ decision to marry her to someone else, and also to prove that her love with her boy friend is strong. She came to an unmanned island and lived out her days with the sky, the earth, the sea and the mountain as her witnesses, days shall pass, until she is again just dust. When her younger family members visited her, they called her "Gupo" (great-aunt in Chinese) out of respect. Therefore, when the story of this girl who lived her life guarding her love spread, the story of the “Gupo” became the beautiful legend of this unmanned island!

Sianjianyu

Sianjiaoyu is situated south of Jibeiyu, Baisha Township in Penghu County, and north of Chihkan. The seventh largest island in Penghu is flat and low in the center, rising up on the east and west, with basaltic transverse joints lined up along the steep coast, creating a magnificent sight. Speaking of Hujingyu, the legend of "Hujing Sunken City" never fails to arouse people’s interest and curiosity. Legend has it that there is something like a decadent city wall lying at the bottom of the ocean beneath Hujing. There has never been a real answer as to what the truth really is, and there has long been two discrepant theories in the academia; one is, "The sunken ancient city is the special basaltic columnar joint terrain extended under the sea from Tongpan and Hujing, therefore forming the false impression of a sunken city"; another theory beliefs that there must be a reason why it is documented in historical literature, not only is it in the ancient history books, there are also many local legends regarding this unusual sight; all of this just adds to the mystery of Hujingyu.

Originally named "Flower House", legend has it that when this village was first established, their ancestors looked at the local terrain, and discovered that the mountains surrounding the place are just like lotus petals. Therefore, they first reclaimed the land around "the heart of the flower" (Shanzaiweiding) and built a house, thus naming it "Flower House", also meaning the house that was built at the heart of the flower. In 1971, the late president Chiang Ching-kuo visited the flower house, and seeing that it sits in the middle of four other villages in Wangan Township, renamed it "Jhongshe" (the village in the middle). The village is filled with ancient houses that are built of coral reefs.
There were originally over 80 sanheyuan (old three-section compound house), and now only about 50 of them are still well-preserved. The architecture style of the historical houses in Jhongshe Village is called "one stamp" style sanheyuan, the main structure should be looked at from the inside to the outside; it is a very special old village.
