About Fongru Herb |
| Penghu Fongru herb is used to make Fongru tea, which has a similar taste to Herb Juice, only richer and stronger. In the summer, iced Fongru tea is always popular with locals and visitors alike, because it is most thirst-quenching. Also known as Siangru herb (glossogyne tenuifolia cass), Fongru is a vine herbal plant native to Penghu. Together with cactus and aloe, they are seen as the three treasures of Penghu. Fongru tea is also called Penghu herb juice, and the plant itself is rated as one of the top 6 most valuable medicinal herbs. Once harvested, Fongru is sun-dried before exported to Taiwan for use in the recipes of mixed Herbs Juice. It contains abundant trace element and essential oils, and is traditionally used in Chinese medicine for its various medicinal functions. These include hepatoprotective, diuretic, anti-inflammatory, and anti-pyretic effects. |

| As Fongru shrubs can grow in dry, windy weather, as well as on alkaline and infertile soil, it's quite fit to grow in Penghu, where it is frequented by northeast monsoons and typhoons. Hence, Fongru is a highly important economic crop for Penghu. Kaohsiung District Agricultural Research and Extension Station, Council of Agriculture, has researched and successfully developed new products such as "instant Fongru tea", "bottled Fongru drinks", and "Fongru jelly", ready for commercial mass production so that everyone will be able to enjoy the treat of Penghu herbal juice. Next time you're in Penghu, don't forget to treat yourself to a cup of cool, thirst-quenching Fongru tea. |
